Dhaka Bureau: The Election Commission (EC) is going to start the smart card distribution program again on January 23. As a part of this, high-quality national identity cards, or smart cards, will be distributed among 2.4 million citizens of 15 upazilas in the country this month. The constitutional institution will gradually distribute this card to 10 more upazilas. Apart from this, smart cards, which are closed due to elections, will also be distributed. EC sources have confirmed that the instructions have already been sent to the field level.
According to sources, Bakerganj in Barisal, Comilla’s cantonment, Birampur in Dinajpur, and Sirajganj Ullapara on January 25–26, Katiyadi of Chittagong, Lalpur in Natore, Fulbaria of Mymensingh, and Bhagarjar, Bhagar, and Bhagar. 25 smartcards will be distributed by January 31. And this card will be distributed from February 4 to 6 in Phultala and Kushtia Bheramara in Khulna. Instructions have already been given to the concerned election officials in this regard. In these 15 upazilas, 24 lakh, 56 thousand, and 400 people will be given this citizen identity card.
Meanwhile, the EC has sent instructions to the officials to start the smart card distribution program suspended due to the parliamentary elections. In the directive sent by Faisal Quader, Director (Operations) of the National Identity Registration Division of the organization, it is said that on the occasion of the 12th National Assembly elections, the smart card distribution program, which is ongoing across the country at the field level, was directed to be completed by October 30.
