CU Representative: The students of the Sports Science Department locked the main gate of Chittagong University (CU), demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor amid the movement of the teachers’ association.
They are protesting on Wednesday (January 17) around 11:30 a.m. to demand a session-free department, an academic calendar, and permanent classrooms.
Chabi is Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Education. The protestors said that the position will continue until Shireen Akhtar comes to the protest site and gives a written assurance.
Mostafizur Rahman Naeem, a student of the 2019–20 session, said that we have a future. But so far, we are stuck with the department. At present, it has become such a situation that we spend our lives here. Will they increase our working age?
Director of the department Professor Dr. Mohammad Abul Manchur said it is a special department related to sports. Sports are played here. It is not like the Bengali or English departments. It has been introduced in only 3 universities in Bangladesh; Chittagong University is one of them. Due to this, there are not enough graduates in this department. Moreover, those who have come out have a deficiency in basic qualifications to become teachers. That is why it was not possible to appoint teachers as per the demands of the department. As a result, session congestion is prolonged.
He also said that we could not build our own building even in 8 years due to a lack of financial assistance from the government. They temporarily hold classes in the university gymnasium. Now we are taking initiative for the construction of permanent buildings and making arrangements for the publication of notifications for the recruitment of teachers.
Dr. Proctor. Nurul Azim Sikder said we are trying to reach an agreement through discussion with the students. We support their movement, and we ourselves do not want the students to suffer. They claim to speak to the vice chancellor directly, and we have assured them that the matter will be discussed with madam.
