Dhaka Bureau: The election for reserved women’s seats in the 12th National Parliament will be held in February. Election Commission (EC) Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath gave this information in a briefing on Tuesday afternoon.

As per the existing law, women’s seats are allocated in proportion to the number of seats won by parties in direct elections. Members of Parliament elected in general seats of Parliament become voters of reserved seats.

The schedule may be announced within the next week, said Ashok Kumar Debnath. All preparations are being made for this. That is, the election of 50 reserved seats for women will be held in the first session of the Parliament itself.

In the 12th parliamentary elections, Awami League got 223 seats, Jatiya Party 11, Jasad 1, Workers Party 1, Kalyan Party 1, independent 62 seats. In the remaining seat, Naogaon-2, due to the death of a candidate, voting will be held there on February 12.

In the proportional representation system, the Awami League can get 38 seats (including two from Jasad and the Workers Party, who won the boat symbol), the Jatiya Party can get two, and independent candidates can get 10 reserved seats. The Workers Party, Jasad Party, and Kalyan Party got one seat each in the direct election, but reserved women seats do not get them, but if independents join somewhere, then the calculation will change.

A day is kept for voting in this election, but the result is known before that. As against the 50 reserved seats for women, an equal number of candidates are nominated by parties and alliances, so they can be declared unopposed on the day of the withdrawal deadline.
