Noakhali Correspondent: Allegations of attack on boat workers while distributing leaflets on behalf of Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader in Bhuiyarhat Bazaar of Kabirhat Upazila of Noakhali.
Former mayor of Kabirhat municipality Alabox Taher Titu, president of Upazila Jubo League Abu Zafar Abir, general secretary Nazrul Islam, organizing secretary of Upazila Jubo League Anwar Hossain Farooq, and several leaders and activists of the Awami League and allied organizations were injured in this attack. At this time, their three microbuses were vandalized.
The attack was allegedly carried out on Wednesday (January 3) night. The victimized Awami League leaders and activists complained that the attack was carried out under the leadership of Batia Union Parishad Chairman Jasim Uddin Shaheen.
In a press conference called to protest the immediate attack, the former mayor of Kabirhat municipality, Alabox Taher Titu, complained that on Wednesday, they distributed leaflets and mass communication on behalf of Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader at Kacharihat market of Batia Union with hundreds of upazila Awami League leaders and activists. Local UP Chairman Jasim Uddin Shaheen stopped them there. Later, when they went to Bhuiyarhat market in the upazila, they were stopped again under the leadership of Shaheen Chairman. At one stage, the attack was carried out. At this time, their three microbuses were vandalized. The motorcycle of a Chhatra League leader named Nabil is missing.
When asked about the complaint, Batia Union Parishad Chairman Jasim Uddin denied the complaint and said that they are not promoting the boat symbol. They are campaigning ahead of the upazila elections.
Kabirhat Upazila Awami League general secretary and municipal mayor Zahirul Haque Raihan said, I heard that some of our party’s leaders and activists went to distribute leaflets and mass communication on behalf of Kader Bhai. Arguments and fights took place between them based on the speech at the public meeting. It can be internal within the group. The matter has been communicated to the party leader. He said he would actually talk about it.
Kabirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Humayon Kabir said that the police visited the spot after getting information about the fight between the two parties. Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is received.
