Atiqur Rahman Salu was the one-time organizing secretary of East Pakistan Student Union Menon Group, the founding general secretary of East Bengal Revolutionary Student Union, the first president of Swadhin Bangladesh Revolutionary Student Union, one of the editors of the United People’s Party, and the chairman of the New York-based International Farakka Committee.
Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) Chairman Mustafa Jamal Haider made the above comments in a condolence message.
Atiqur Rahman Salu died this afternoon while undergoing treatment in New York. He was suffering from lung cancer.
Mustafa Jamal Haider, while narrating the history of late Salu’s long political life, said that he played a heroic role in the anti-education commission movement of 1962, the historic mass uprising of 1979, and the great freedom war. During his stay in the United States, he formed the International Farakka Committee, which played a significant role in creating widespread public opinion at home and abroad against India in the equitable distribution of water in the Padma River and other rivers.
Mustafa Jamal Haider expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the late Atiqur Rahman Salu and prayed for the repose of the departed soul.
