Dhaka Bureau: Today is the 60th death anniversary of Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, the son of democracy. He died on December 5, 1963, in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. He was buried in the shrine of the three leaders near the High Court.
On the occasion of the day, President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their respects to his memory in separate messages.
In his speech, the President said that Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy was a prudent and wise political organizer. He formed the Independent Muslim Party in 1926 and the United Muslim Party in 1937 to organize Muslims in British India. He also played an important role in establishing the then-Awami Muslim League (later Awami League) on June 23, 1949. He also played an important role in the victory of the United Front against the Muslim League in the first provincial assembly elections held in 1954.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in her speech that Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy’s life and ideals always give us courage and motivation for the progress of democracy and the welfare of people. The nation will always remember the contribution of this great leader with respect.
The Prime Minister said, “Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy has struggled throughout his life to establish the socio-economic development and political rights of the hardworking people of this subcontinent. Since the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy has raised and organized the people of this country against the anti-people activities of the then Pakistani government. As a talented political organizer, the people’s organization Bangladesh Awami League developed under his skillful management. The visionary leadership of his worthy successor, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, united the Bengali nation against the oppression of the Pakistani government. Our great freedom was achieved on December 16, 1971, through Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib’s 24-year-long political struggle and nine months of bloody liberation war.
Various political, social, and cultural organizations have taken up elaborate programs on the occasion of his death anniversary. Various organizations, including the Awami League, are carrying out programs in the morning by paying respects at the deceased’s shrine.
