Dhaka Bureau: Russia has no doubts about the ability of the Bangladesh authorities to conduct the parliamentary elections on January 7, 2024, independently, without the help of foreign well-wishers, in accordance with national laws.
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said this at a recent weekly press conference. On Saturday (November 25), the Russian Embassy in Dhaka published its statement regarding Bangladesh.
Zakharova also noted that the US and its allies are trying to influence Bangladesh’s internal political process to ensure ‘transparency and inclusiveness’ in the elections.
He said there was a meeting between Peter Haas, the US ambassador to Bangladesh, and a high-ranking representative of the opposition in late October. In the meeting, they discussed the plan for organizing anti-government protests in the country. The ambassador also pledged support to the leader from the UK, Australia, and several other countries.
Maria Zakharova also pointed out that these activities of the US ambassador in Dhaka ‘can be seen as nothing less than serious interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state’. He said it shows disregard for the rules and regulations enshrined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
