City Reporter: After the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, the Mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury Expressway is being inaugurated in the port city of Chittagong. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the first elevated expressway in the port city, built at a cost of Tk.
The length of this expressway is 15.20 kilometers, and the width is 16.50 meters. The four-lane flyover will have a length of 362 meters and 14 ramps of 6.80 meters, which will be completed by June next year.
Of the 15.2 km long expressway from Patenga to Lalkhan Bazar, about 15 km of section up to Tigerpass has been completed, but all the ramps are pending. Among the 14 ramps, there will be one at the GEC intersection, two at Tigerpass, four at Agrabad, one at Fakirhat, two at Nimtala, two at CEPZ, and two at the KEPZ area. Among the four ramps in the Agrabad area, there will be one on Ethnological Museum Road, one on World Trade Center Road, and two on Agrabad Access Road. However, this expressway is being opened with a one-kilometer section from Tigerpass to Lalkhan Bazar and ramp work pending. The Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) approved the proposal to name the expressway after the late Awami League leader, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel built under the Karnaphuli River on October 28. The stakeholders feel that the tunnel and the elevated expressway are complementary to each other.
The benefits of the elevated expressway are that a new road network will be created between south Chittagong and Chittagong city by establishing a direct connection between the elevated expressway and the Bangabandhu tunnel. The problem of traffic congestion in the city will be reduced due to the direct connection of the elevated expressway with CEPZ and KEPZ in Chittagong City. Passengers can travel to the airport in just 20 minutes from Chittagong City. As a result of the connection of the Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury flyover with the elevated expressway, the connection between the various upazilas of North and South Chittagong will be established, and the problem of traffic congestion in South Chittagong will be solved. Daily commute time for the public will be saved. It will play a major role in the country’s economy. Above all, foreign investors will be attracted as the communication system is improved.
