Garment workers killed in police firing in Gazipur

Gazipur Correspondent: A worker named Russell Howladar (26) was killed in a police firing during the agitation demanding an increase in the salary and allowances of garment workers in the Basan police station area of Gazipur.

On Monday (October 30), around 3:30 p.m., he was taken unconscious to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Russell Jhalkathi is the son of Hannan Howladar of Khagutia village in Sadar Upazila. He lived in a mess in the Gazipur Basan “Malek Bari” area.

Colleague and roommate who brought him to the hospital. Abu Sufian said he used to work in a local factory called “Design Express Limited”. The electrician at the factory is Russell Howlader. Workers of local 5–6 garments were agitating to demand an increase in salary. That’s why the authorities declared their factory a holiday in the morning. Then he left the factory at around 11:30 p.m. and headed home. Then the police shot at him in front of the factory. Russell was shot in the right side of the chest and in the right hand. He was immediately rescued and taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical. Seeing the deterioration of his condition there, the doctor on duty sent Russell to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead.

According to the doctor in charge of the police camp at DMK Hospital, Bachchu Mia confirmed his death. He said that the body has been kept in the morgue.
