Dhaka Bureau: The European Union (EU) has decided not to send a full-fledged election observation team due to a lack of budget, said Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam. He said this in response to questions from reporters at his office in the election building on Thursday (September 21).
The EC Secretary said that the Head of Delegations of the European Union through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that they had met with various stakeholders in July and thanked them for being fruitful. In that email, he also said that their head office has decided to send a full-fledged mission to observe the elections in the financial year 2023–24.
However, it was not approved due to a lack of budget. It has decided not to send observers for now. The EC Secretary added that they will continue their communication with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Kazi Habibul Awal. In response to a question, Jahangir Alam said that they were not sending a full team. Here we are talking about the full team.
When asked whether their decision would question the election, the secretary said the CEC could say it well. And they said the full thing. So will you send a small group, or will those who are in this country do it? Because they said to continue communication.
He also said that there is a meeting with the United Kingdom’s pre-observation team for the meeting in October.
