Dhaka Bureau: Today is Great Education Day. The day is being celebrated across the country with due dignity. September 17, 1962, is a bloody memory of the mass movement of students to protest against the imposition of anti-people, repressive education policies by the Pakistani government and to introduce a people-oriented education policy.
On this day in 1962, a massive student movement was formed to oppose the education policy of the Sharif Commission imposed by the then Pakistani military ruler Ayub Khan. The All-Party Student Action Committee, led by the student union, called for a nationwide strike program. The Pakistani military junta used the police force to quell the student movement.
At one point, the police opened fire on the students’ procession at the High Court intersection. Mustafa, Babul, Waziullah, etc. were martyred. Since then, various political, social, and student organizations have been celebrating the day as ‘Great Education Day’ every year.
Various political and student organizations have announced colorful programs to commemorate the martyrs on the occasion of the day. Apart from this, the Bangladesh Chhatra League and Chhatra Sangram Parishad leaders will pay tribute with flowers at the High Court-adjacent Shiksha Odhikar Chatwar this morning.
