Dhaka Bureau: Ashura will be celebrated on July 29 (Saturday) as the moon of Muharram month is not visible in the country’s sky. This decision was taken at the meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at Baitul Mukarram Islamic Foundation in Dhaka on Tuesday (July 18) evening.

According to a press release from the Islamic Foundation, the moon of the month of Muharram was not seen in the sky of Bangladesh on Tuesday. As a result, the month of Muharram will start counting on July 20. Holy Ashura will be celebrated in the country on Saturday, July 29 (10th of Muharram).

According to Islam, Ashura is particularly significant to Muslims around the world, commemorating the tragic and heartbreaking events of Karbala. On this day, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the son-in-law of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), was martyred in the desert of Karbala on the banks of the Euphrates. Since then, the tragic event of Karbala has been observed in the Muslim world as a symbol of sacrifice and mourning.
