Dhaka Bureau: Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastgir Gazi, Birpratik, MP, said that the government will continue to provide timely support to enrich and modernize the jute sector of Bangladesh. At present, policy support is being provided to the stakeholders of the jute sector, besides providing cash assistance to the export sector of versatile jute products.
The minister said this during a meeting with a delegation of the Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association (BJSA) in the conference room of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute at the Secretariat today (July 18). At this time, Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association (BJSA) Chairman Sheikh Kofil Uddin, MP, Ministry of Textiles and Jute Additional Secretary (Planning) Md. Mahmud Hossain, Additional (Jute) Taslim Kaniz Nahida, and Akiz Jute Mills Ltd. Chairman Sheikh Nasiruddin, along with leaders of the association and senior officials of the ministry, were present.
The minister said that effective measures have been taken to ensure the supply of raw jute to continue the flow of export earnings from jute and jute products. For this reason, to prevent unlicensed, unscrupulous traders from buying and selling raw jute and stockpiling, the Jute Directorate has been directed to take necessary measures to ensure the supply of raw jute in the market. The Minister said to the officials of the Ministry and the Jute Directorate, “According to the ‘Compulsory Use of Jute Wraps in Products Act, 2010’, the use of jute bags is mandatory for 19 products. If someone uses plastic in these products, then the legal system will be strengthened. Although the campaign is ongoing throughout the country, a special campaign has to be conducted in the current context.
The representatives of BJSA said that as a result of the formulation and implementation of multifaceted action plans by the government in Patkhat, this sector is making an outstanding contribution to the national economy. In the current era of sustainable development, there has been a huge demand for eco-friendly jute and jute products worldwide. Everyone should work together to increase the export of eco-friendly jute products. Post-Covid-19, the Russia-Ukraine crisis and the jute-centric policies of neighboring countries have slowed down the export trade of jute and jute products.
The minister said that the market price of jute is always being monitored with the aim of ensuring the supply of raw jute required in the country and speeding up the export of jute and jute products. Jute production has increased manifold in recent years due to the proper supply of seeds to ensure jute cultivation as well as other input support for farmers. As a result, jute mills are able to continuously collect jute, which plays an important role in export earnings.
He said jute season has started this year. Raw jute has started coming into the market in different parts of the country. The production of raw jute this season is also satisfactory. Jute growers will get a good price for good jute. The raw jute market will always be monitored so that the raw jute price does not become unsustainable for any reason.
