Anwara representative: The country’s largest fertilizer factory has been closed for nine months due to a gas shortage. Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Company Limited (CUFL) is a state-owned fertilizer factory located in Anwara. According to the concerned authorities, there is a daily loss of about 3 crore rupees. If the factory is operational, it is capable of producing 1 thousand metric tons of ammonia and 1100 metric tons of urea daily.
According to CUFL sources, the production of urea fertilizer and ammonia at CUFL has been stopped since November 22 last year after a fire broke out in the boiler of the factory. After that, the factory was closed due to a gas shortage on May 5th, but it went back to production after repairs. Catalyst reduction work has also been completed at the factory. 42 mmcfd of gas is required continuously for one month to carry out the work properly. But the work of catalyst reduction was not completed as the gas supply to the factory was stopped.
Mizanur Rahman, managing director of CUFL, said that since November 22 last year, the factory has been closed for nine months due to mechanical problems and a gas shortage. It is causing a daily loss of around 3 crore rupees. I am not getting a solution to the poison even by writing to various offices. This has the potential to degrade the quality of the reduction. As a result, the factory will lose its usefulness in producing fertilizer, with long-term risk and huge financial loss.
When asked about this, the Managing Director of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited, Engineer Rafiqul Islam, said that there is a specific allocation from the government and BCIC regarding the supply of gas to the fertilizer factory. According to that, gas will be given to CUFL if the gas supply order is granted.
