Dhaka Bureau: In May this year, 408 people were killed in 491 road accidents in Deshjur. 631 people were injured during this time. This report has been prepared by the Road Safety Foundation by monitoring the news of road, rail, and maritime accidents published in the national, regional, and online newspapers of the country.
This information was given in a press release on Friday, June 9. At the same time, 23 people were killed and six injured in 25 railway accidents. Four people died and two went missing in six accidents on the waterway.
According to the press release, they observed and analyzed these accidents and found that 165 accidents occurred on national highways, 201 on regional roads, 73 on rural roads, 48 on city roads, and four in other places.
The highest number of accidents and fatalities occurred in Dhaka Division in May, where 102 people were killed in 134 accidents. At least 21 accidents occurred in Sylhet division, and at least 20 people lost their lives in accidents in Barisal division.
Statistics show that 141 motorcyclists and passengers, 6 bus passengers, 36 truck-covered van-pickup-tractor-trolley-lorry-tanker passengers, 18 private car-microbus-ambulance passengers, and three-wheeler passengers (easybike-CNG-autorickshaw-autovan-Mishuk) 68 passengers in locally made vehicles (Nasimon-Karimon-Mahindra-Itbhanga machine vehicles) 15 and bicycle-pedal rickshaw-rickshaw vans killed.
According to the Road Safety Foundation, most accidents are caused by a loss of vehicle control. That is, accidents are happening due to excess speed. Accidents cannot be reduced if the reckless speed of vehicles on the road is not controlled. Just as motivational training is needed for speed control, so is the acquisition of technical competence by the concerned authorities.
