Bangladesh wants improvement in quality of life, not conflict

Dhaka Bureau: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that Bangladesh does not want any more conflict but wants to improve the quality of life of the people. He said, ‘We don’t want any more unrest or conflict. We want to improve people’s lives, and we always wish for that.’

The Prime Minister made this comment at a function organized on Sunday (May 28) to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the awarding of the Julio Curie Peace Medal to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

In this context, Sheikh Hasina said, “The peaceful democratic environment prevailing in the country since the elections of 2008 has helped Bangladesh achieve significant socio-economic development in the last 14 years.” Has been able to contribute to social development.

He said, “The government is working systematically for the development of the people of the country after being elected in the 2008 elections. As a result, we have been able to reduce the rate of poverty and maternal mortality, increase the rate of education, and increase the average life expectancy of the people. The sustainable and peaceful democratic environment prevailing in the country is the only reason for the unprecedented socio-economic progress of Bangladesh. It must be remembered.’

He said, ‘Now why is this arms race going on? The money that is being used for the arms race should not be used for starving children and people.” Thousands of children and women around the world are living inhumane lives because of this arms race.

In this context, Sheikh Hasina mentioned that Bangladesh has sheltered more than 1 million forcibly displaced Rohingya citizens of Myanmar who faced persecution that reminded her of the situation in 1971.

He said, “We want peace to return to the world; there will be no unrest in the world.”

The Prime Minister said, ‘Those who did not want the country’s independence killed the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Every moment, we have to overcome their (anti-independence) obstacles.

Paying tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Prime Minister said, “Bangabandhu received the peace award and preached the message of peace throughout his life, but he had to sacrifice his life.”

“What a pity for us that the man who spoke peace all his life had to give his life,” he added, adding, “Today he is no longer with us, but we want his country to develop into a prosperous one.”

Sheikh Hasina also announced the launch of the ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Peace Award’ to recognize those who are working for peace at home and abroad.

He said, ‘Because we want peace, and we will certainly move forward on the path of peace.’

The program was organized by the Cabinet Department at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC). Cabinet Secretary Md. gave a welcome speech at the event. Mahbub Hossain and prominent politician and researcher Monayem Sarkar delivered the keynote speeches.

Former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Prof. Dr., participated in the discussion on the main speech. AMS Arefin Siddique, former Chief Secretary Kamal Abdul Nasser Chowdhury, and eminent writer Anwara Syed Haque The President of Bangladesh Shanti Parishad, Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, expressed his thanks.

A video documentary on Bangabandhu and his receiving of the Julio-Curi Peace Medal was shown at the beginning.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister unveiled the commemorative postage stamp and the first day cover on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Julio-Curie Peace Medal being awarded to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He also unveiled the cover of a souvenir publication to mark the day.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was awarded the Julio-Curie Peace Prize by the World Peace Council on May 23, 1973. World leaders such as Fidel Castro, Ho Chi Minh, Yasser Arafat, Salvador Allende, Nelson Mandela, Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa, poet and politician Pablo Neruda, Jaraharlal Nehru, Martin Luther King, and Leonid Brezhnev have received this award.

The Peace Prize of the World Peace Council was an international recognition of the contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to establishing world peace. Besides, the Julio-Curie Peace Prize was the first international award for Bangladesh. To commemorate the contribution of world-renowned scientists Marie Curie and Pierre Curie to the struggle for world peace, the World Peace Council has been awarding the Julio-Curie Peace Prize since 1950 to distinguished individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions to human welfare and the struggle for peace against fascism and imperialism.
