Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: There have been reports of the deaths of two people in Saint Martin, an eight-square-kilometer coral-rich island in the Bay of Bengal. Apart from this, 11 others were injured.
Cyclone Moka has been raging since Sunday (May 14) at 2:00 p.m. As of writing this report at around 5 p.m., there is heavy rain along with gusty winds.
At least 340 houses were destroyed in Madharpara, Konarpara, Galachipa, Dakshinpara, Paschimpara, and Uttarpara by the cyclone. Hundreds of trees were uprooted. Several villages in Uttarpara, Paschimpara, and the eastern side are being flooded by the sea tide.
About 6,000 local people are staying in three cyclone shelters, some educational institutions, and more than 37 hotels, resorts, and cottages. Most are children and women.
Chairman of the Saint Martin Union Parishad Mujibur Rahman said that after two o’clock in the afternoon, it started raining with a strong wind. It continues until four in the afternoon. People’s houses and trees are collapsing. 10–15 people were injured when the tree fell. Among them, the condition of one woman is critical. He is being treated at the hospital.
