Rangamati Correspondent: The truck fell into the ditch after the Kachalong bridge suddenly collapsed in Baghaichhari, Rangamati. At this time, traffic on the Rangamati-Baghaichhari-Khagrachari road was stopped. The incident took place on Monday morning in the Choumhani Model Town area of Baghaichhari Upazila. The Army and Road Department are working to open road communication.
According to related sources, a truck carrying a stone from Khagrachari reached the Choumhani model town area of Rangamati Baghaichari upazila after crossing the Kachalong Bridge. Meanwhile, the truck fell into the ditch. Vehicular movement on the Rangamati-Baghaichhari-Khagrachari road was stopped. A long traffic jam is being created at the moment. After getting the information, Khagrachari Road and Township Department and army personnel rushed and tried to rescue the truck. However, there were no casualties.
Allegedly, on January 11, 2016, Khagrachari Road and Township Department started the work of a new bridge over the Kachalong River in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati at a cost of Tk 11.35 million. The construction of the bridge is expected to be completed in 2019. But for some unknown reason, the road and township department could not complete the construction of this bridge even after seven long years. Vehicles were plying on the half-built bridge at risk.
Khagrachari Road and Township Department Executive Engineer Maksudur Rahman said that the workers of the road department have started work after receiving the news of the pavement breaking. Efforts are being made to normalize traffic. Besides, although the work on the new bridge has been completed, there is still some work to be done on the connecting road. I hope the bridge construction work will be completed soon. However, the official of the road department could not give a proper answer as to why the construction work of the bridge was not completed even after many years.
