Dhaka Bureau: Professor of Geology and Mining Department of Rajshahi University (Rabi). The verdict dismissing the verdict of the defendants in the S. Taher murder case has been published. As a result, there is no obstacle to the execution of accused teacher Mohiuddin and caretaker Jahangir in this case.
The full 21-page judgment was published after the 8-member appellate bench headed by the Chief Justice signed it on Wednesday (May 3).
Before this, on February 1, 2006, the body of Professor Taher, who was murdered due to promotion issues, was recovered from the manhole of the Rajshahi University quarter. On February 3, Sanjid Alvi Ahmed, the son of the slain Professor Taher, filed a murder case against the unidentified accused at Motihar police station in Rajshahi metropolis. Later, on May 22, 2008, Rajshahi’s speedy trial court ruled on this murder case.
In the verdict, four people were sentenced to death, and two were acquitted. The convicts are Rabi, Associate Professor of Geology and Mining Department. Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin, the deceased professor Caretaker of Taher Basar. Jahangir Alam, Jahangir Alam’s brother Nazmul Alam, and Nazmul Alam’s relative Abdus Salam
The two accused in the acquitted chargesheet are the then president of Rajshahi University Students’ Camp, Mahbubul Alam Salehi, and Azimuddin Munshi. Later that year (2008), a death reference came to the High Court as per law from the trial court. Besides, the defendants also appealed.
After the hearing of both applications on April 21, 2013, Professor Dr. The High Court upheld the death sentences of two accused in the S. Taher murder case and reduced the sentences of the other two accused to life imprisonment. The two defendants upholding the death sentence are Rabi’s associate professor, Dr. Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin, and the deceased Dr. Caretaker of Taher’s house. Jahangir Alam.
The two defendants who got the life sentence reduced to a death sentence are Md. Jahangir Alam’s brother Nazmul Alam and Nazmul Alam’s Samandhi Abdus Salam. The defendants then appealed to the Appellate Division. Apart from this, the state filed a separate appeal seeking to increase the sentences of the two convicts who were sentenced to life. On April 5, last year, the Appellate Division upheld the judgment of the High Court Division.
Later on September 15, the full copy of the judgment of the Appellate Division was published. Then the defendants filed a review application. In continuation of this, after the hearing of the review application, the day of the final judgment was fixed for Thursday. Last year, in the full verdict given by the Appellate Division regarding the murder, it was said that after reviewing the confessions of the accused, it could be seen that Mian Mohammad Mohiuddin was playing a key and active role in the murder conspiracy.
We have no hesitation in saying that Rajshahi University Associate Professor Dr. Mohiuddin only wants to be promoted as a professor. Removed Taher from this world. His idea was, “If Taher is alive, his promotion as a professor is not possible. We also have no hesitation in saying that the appellant Jahangir Alam and the petitioners Abdus Salam and Nazmul have killed Prof. Taher for getting financial and other benefits. Mohiuddin accepted the offer.
