Dhaka Bureau: Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman has been transferred from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj to Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
He was taken to Gazipur from Dhaka Central Jail on Friday (March 31) around 10:30 a.m. Dhaka Central Jail Deputy District Officer Aminul Islam confirmed the matter and said that journalist Shamsuzzaman has been transferred to Kashimpur Jail as per the instructions of higher authorities.
Shamsuzzaman was brought before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court of Dhaka at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, 30 hours after being picked up from Savar’s house by the CID. The Ramna police applied to the court to detain him in jail. On the other hand, his lawyers applied for bail on behalf of Shamsuzzaman. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain of the CMM Court of Dhaka rejected the bail application and ordered to send him to jail after hearing the application at two o’clock. Then he was taken to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj in a prison van around 3:30 p.m.
Note that on Wednesday (March 29), a case was filed against Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman Shams under the Digital Security Act. The case was filed at the Tejgaon police station in the capital.
It is said in the statement of the case that the report prepared by Shams was published on Prothom Alo on Independence Day. Because of that report, it has created adverse reactions in the outside world, including Bangladesh. Discussion and criticism started about the image of the country and the achievement of independence worldwide. Later, in a report by Ekatar TV, Prothom Alo’s report was proven to be intentional and false.
It is also mentioned in the statement that the publication of the false information by Prothom Alo and its dissemination on online and social media are questioning the achievements of Bangladesh, tarnishing the image of the government, and deteriorating law and order.
