Nurul Islam: Beef and chicken meat are being sold at high prices in Lohagara in south Chittagong for several months, which is beyond the affordability of low-income people. Beef is being sold at 8 cents per kg. It contains about 250 grams of beef bones and fat. Goat meat is sold for more than a thousand rupees per kilogram. In this situation, middle-class and low-income people try to get a taste of protein in chicken meat. But the price of chicken has also set a record. Broiler chickens are being sold in Lohagara at Tk 250 per kg. Golden chicken is being sold at Rs 370 per kg. Layer chicken at 300 g per kg. Domestic chicken is being sold at a price of more than 600 rupees per kg.

The fish market in the area also said that the fire was common. No sea fish is available for less than 800 taka per kilogram. Small-sized hilsa fish are 850 taka per kg, and medium-sized hilsa are 1,000 taka per kg. Prawns cooked with vegetables: 760 taka per kg. There are hardly any people who buy shrimp weighing more than 25 grams. But it is almost impossible for low-income people. Lobster, 1,000 taka per kg. Fish farmed in local ponds are also being sold at higher prices. The price of pangas, known as the poor man’s fish, has also increased.

On the other hand, since the end of the winter season, all kinds of vegetables are being sold at higher prices in almost all markets in Lohagara upazila, including Battali Motor Station. Almost all vegetable prices have risen in the run-up to Ramadan.A lot of lathi is being sold at 90 rupees per kg. The price per kilogram is 100 rupees. Barab is being sold at Rs 80 per kg, and Titkarla is being sold at Rs 80 per kg. Also, the price of each pair of lemons is more than 40 rupees. In this way, the price of almost all vegetables is beyond the reach of low-income people, the buyers said.

Even in the iftar market of the holy month of Ramadan, the price of any food is not low, but rather high.  The fruit market is also on fire. People on low income say it is nearly impossible to support a family on a daily basis. Household expenses increase during Ramadan.  Ramadan expenses have risen even more this year. Because the price of daily necessities is sky high.
