Cox’s Bazar Representative: A delegation of 22 members from Myanmar arrived at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar to verify the information of Rohingyas listed for repatriation. The Myanmar delegation reached the transit jetty at Chowdhurypara in Teknaf by crossing the Naf river in several boats on Wednesday at around 10:15 am. The delegation is led by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Maungdu Regional Director Aung Myew.

Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) Muhammed Samchu-Ddouza welcomed the Myanmar delegation at Teknaf.

Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said the Myanmar delegation will verify the information of 429 Rohingyas listed for repatriation during their stay in Teknaf. At the same time, they will also record the information of the recently born children in the Rohingya refugee camps.

According to the Office of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, Bangladesh has sent a list of more than 800,000 Rohingyas to Myanmar for repatriation. From that list, 1,140 people were initially selected for repatriation.

Of these, Myanmar agreed to repatriate 711 Rohingyas, but it had objections to the remaining 429. The Myanmar delegation has come to Teknaf to verify the information about those 429 Rohingya. Rohingya information is being verified at the Malanch conference room inside Teknaf’s land port.

65 Rohingyas are scheduled to be verified on the first day today, Wednesday. Officials of the Office of the Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation said that it may take at least six days to complete the verification of the information of 429 Rohingya.

The number of Rohingya registered in 33 shelter camps in Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar is 1.25 lakh. Out of this, 8 lakh Rohingyas came after August 25, 2017. It has not been possible to send a single Rohingya back to Myanmar in five and a half years. The Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar’s refugee camp have repeatedly stated that they will not return to Myanmar unless they are granted citizenship.
