Prof. Taher’s murder: review dismissed, hanging of two upheld

Rajshahi Correspondent: Professor S. Taher Ahmed, the then teacher at Rajshahi University in the murder case. Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin and the supervisor of Professor Taher’s residence The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court dismissed the review petition against Jahangir Alam’s death sentence.

As a result, there was no legal obstacle to the execution of these two accused. But they will only get a chance to seek pardon from the President.

The full appellate bench of eight judges, led by Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui, passed the order on Thursday (March 2).

Senior advocate SN Goswami and advocate SM Shahjahan heard the review petition in court. Attorney General A. M. Amin Uddin and Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed testified for the state.

If the convicts do not seek pardon from the President or if the President rejects their pleas for pardon, the jail authorities will execute them.

On February 1, 2006, 59-year-old Professor Taher Ahmed was killed, and police recovered his body from a septic tank on the university campus on February 3. Two days later, on February 3 of that year, the victim’s son, Sanjid Alvi Ahmed, filed a murder case against unknown persons at the Motihar police station in Rajshahi city.
