Must be more energetic to increase revenue collection: PM

Dhaka Bureau: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the National Board of Revenue (NBR to work more energetically to increase revenue collection from the domestic sector. He said this in a message given on the occasion of the “Revenue Conference” on Sunday, February 5.

The Prime Minister said that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is having an adverse effect on the economy of Bangladesh as well as the global economy. In this global economic context, I hope the National Board of Revenue will work more energetically to increase revenue collection from the domestic sectorl economy. The government spends on implementing development programs and providing services with the money received from the revenue income. Therefore, the importance of NBR is immense in bringing dynamics to government expenditure and economic activities, besides keeping the wheels of the economy moving by consolidating the internal revenue system.

The Chief Minister said the “Revenue Conference” is an excellent initiative of the National Board of Revenue and an exceptional effort. Through this conference, the area of mutual exchange and cooperation between the officials of the Income Tax, Customs, and VAT Departments in revenue collection will increase. The revenue conference will highlight important issues and challenges in tax collection. At the same time, I believe that those concerned will work with honesty and dedication in its transition.

Stating that the government is working to build a people-friendly revenue administration, the Prime Minister said that her government is working to build an information-technology-based, efficient, up-to-date, and people-friendly revenue administration through necessary professional training.

He said that with the continuous development and unremitting efforts of the Awami League government for the last 14 years, Bangladesh has achieved the honor of becoming a developing country. At the same time, Bangladesh today is the 41st largest economy in the world and a wonder of the world on the path of development and prosperity.

The Prime Minister said that our government is working tirelessly to build a developed and prosperous Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty by 2041. To this end, we are implementing the Second Perspective Plan (2021–2041) and giving priority to building a rich revenue pool.

He said Bangladesh is going to be promoted from a low-income country to a middle-income country soon. In this context, NBR is working to increase domestic revenue collection through modernization of revenue management and continues its earnest efforts to implement “Goal 17.2” as part of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The two-day “Revenue Conference 2023” is being organized by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
