Kushtia Correspondent: The brother of a Chhatra League leader was shot dead in a clash between two chairman candidates, workers and supporters on the eve of Khoksa Upazila Parishad by-election in Kushtia, police said. It is said that two others were injured in this incident.
The clash and gunfire took place on Tuesday (November 1) around 10 pm. Abdul Awal Khan (23) who was shot dead is the younger brother of Khoksa Upazila Chhatra League President Shimul Khan.
The injured are Sohail Sheikh (40) son of Mohammad Ali and Majnu Sheikh (40) son of Zafar Sheikh of Shomspur village of the same upazila.
According to the police, District Awami League President Sadar Uddin Khan resigned from the post of Chairman of Khoksa Upazila Parishad and was elected Chairman in the District Parishad elections. It announced the date of the by-election for the post of chairman on Wednesday (November 2). But on the night before the election, there was a clash between supporters of Awami League candidate Babul Akhtar and independent candidate Motahar Hossain Khokon. Abdul Awal Khan, the younger brother of the president of Upazila Chhatra League, was shot when the two sides exchanged fire. Besides, two others were injured in the clash. They were admitted to Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital at night.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khoksa Police Station, Syed Ashiqur Rahman, said that there was a face-to-face clash between the two conflicting parties. Heavy police deployment has been made in the area. He said that the situation is under the control of the police.
Besides, on October 31, when the activists and supporters of the two candidates clashed, the car of the Khoksa Upazila executive officer was vandalized. In this incident, a case was filed in the name of 150 unidentified people.
