Dhaka Bureau: Candidates’ deposit for reserved women’s seats in the National Assembly is being doubled from Tk 10,000 to Tk 20,000. Also, the election period for vacant seats is being increased from 45 days to 90 days.

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam told the journalists such information.

He said that there was a need for amendment in some articles and clauses of the Electoral Act of reserved women’s seats in the Jatiya Sangsad. In the constitution, women’s seats have been increased from 45 to 50. There are still 45 in the electoral law. Therefore it is proposed to make 45 to 50 of the Act. Besides, the election period was 45 days in the existing law. 90 days for election to general seats. Similar to that. On the other hand, the candidates in the women’s seat had a security deposit of Tk 10,000. It is proposed to make 20 thousand like general seats.

He also said that based on the recommendations of the Law Reform Committee headed by Election Commissioner Begum Rasheda Sultana, the matters were approved in the commission meeting. Now it will be sent to the Law Ministry. From there they will send to the cabinet. Then it will go to parliament. Then pass. If the law is not passed, the election will be held as per the existing law.
