Desk News: As a result of Cyclone Sitrang, 33 people died in 14 districts of the country due to falling trees, collapsing walls and drowning. With the passage of time, the death toll is also increasing. Cyclone ‘Sitrang’ started crossing the coast of Bangladesh on Monday evening accompanied by heavy rains and tides several feet higher than normal. A few hours before this, stormy winds and heavy rains started in the coastal districts. Out of these 33 people, most died in Mirsrai. Eight laborers died when a dredger carrying sand sank due to strong winds and waves in the Sandwip channel there due to Cyclone Sitrang.
Since Monday evening, there have been reports of roads being blocked by falling trees in various coastal districts, power poles were broken and many areas were plunged into darkness.
Among them, four died in Bhola Sadar, Daulatkhan, Lalmohan and Charfashan. A couple and their four-year-old child died after a tree fell on their house in Nangalkot, Comilla. Two policemen and an accused died in a storm-hit microbus accident in Tangail. Two died in Tungipara of Gopalganj and one each in Lohagara and Barguna Sadar upazilas of Narail. A mother and son died after a boat sank in a canal of the Yamuna river in Sirajganj.
A laborer died after a trawler sank in Patuakhali. Apart from this, the police reported the death of a rickshaw driver after a wall collapsed in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh during the storm. A woman named Amena Khatun died when a tree fell on a house in Sonakhali area of Barguna Sadar Upazila. A child died when a tree fell on the kitchen during a storm in East Charbata village of Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali. A woman named Safia Begum (65) died after being buried under a tree in Shariatpur.
Two died in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. A child named Anisur Rahman (9) died in a house collapse during Cyclone Sitrang in Ikuria village of Kapasia upazila of Gazipur. A mother and daughter died when a tree fell on their house in Munshiganj’s Lauhjong upazila during the ravages of Cyclone Sitrang.
