Youth Dal leader arrested on charges of attack and extortion at factory

Mirsarai Correspondent: Police have arrested a Youth Dal leader named Shawkat Akbar Sohag (45) on charges of extortion and attack at the Bangladesh Auto Industries factory located in the National Special Economic Zone in Mirsarai. He was arrested around 1 am on Monday (May 19).

He is the son of the late Mofizur Rahman of the Bariyakhali area of ​​Katachra Union of Sohag Upazila. He is the joint secretary of Chittagong North District Youth Dal. In this incident, on Tuesday (May 20), Bangladesh Auto Industries Director Kamrul Hossain filed a case with Zorarganj Police Station, naming Shawkat Akbar Sohag as the main accused and naming 12 people.

According to the case filed with the police station, around 5 pm on Monday, Chittagong North District Youth Dal Joint Secretary Md. Shawkat Akbar Sohag led 8-10 terrorists along with 8-10 motorcycles and demanded a ransom of 20 lakh taka. When Hasibul Hasan, General Manager of Bangladesh Auto Industries Limited, expressed his inability to pay the ransom, he beat up Hasibul Hasan and Project Manager Abdus Samad, along with the staff working in the factory, and seriously injured them. At that time, they took 50 thousand taka from Hasibul Hasan’s pocket and threatened to kill him if he did not pay the ransom.

The accused in the case is Md., son of the deceased Mofizur Rahman of Bariyakhali village of Katachhara union of the upazila. Shawkat Akbar Sohag (45), his brother Shahjahan Akbar (42), Alauddin (50), son of the late Faiz Ahmed Mistry, Sala Uddin (38), son of Abu Bakkar Chandu, Mosharraf Hossain (48), son of Abul Khair, Didarul Alam (40), son of Tajul Islam, Md. Arif Hossain (30), son of the late Abdul Hai of Maliaish village in Mithanala union, Md. Yunus (40), son of Oli Bali of Rahamtabad village, Anwar (32), son of Mujibul Haque of Badiullahpara village in Moghadia union, Md. Jahangir (35), Harun Or Rashid (34), son of Ali Ahmed of Noabganj village of Debidwar police station in Comilla district, and 8-10 unidentified people.

Sabbir Mohammad Selim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Zorarganj Police Station, said that the company’s director, Kamrul Hossain, has filed a case with the police station against 12 people and 8-10 unidentified others, naming them as the plaintiff, on charges of attack and extortion at the Bangladesh Auto Industries factory located in the National Special Economic Zone. The main accused in the case, Shawkat Akbar Sohag, was arrested and sent to court on Tuesday morning. Efforts are underway to arrest the other accused.
