US minister is coming to Dhaka to discuss the Rohingya issue

Dhaka Bureau: US State Department Assistant Secretary for Population, Refugees and Immigration Julieta Valls Noyes is coming to Dhaka on a four-day visit. During his visit, the resettlement of Rohingyas temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh to the United States will be discussed.

Juliet is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow Sunday (December 4).

The US wants to resettle some Rohingya refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh. Washington has recently given Dhaka a list of more than half a hundred Rohingyas who agreed to be resettled in the United States with specific names and identification details. The visit of the US Refugee and Immigration Minister is to discuss how to resettle the Rohingyas.

Regarding the resettlement of Rohingyas in third countries, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the United States is giving importance to several issues. Taking women and children in particular is their first priority. The US wants to resettle women who have lost their dignity in Rakhine and have no family here.

It is known that Julieta will go to Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camp to see the Rohingyas on the ground on Monday (December 5). He will talk with the Rohingyas there. The US minister is scheduled to visit the Rohingyas relocated from Cox’s Bazar to Noakhali’s Bhasanchar on Tuesday (December 6).

According to diplomatic sources, the US Secretary of Refugees and Immigration Affairs will raise the issue of bilateral relations between the two countries and the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war beyond the Rohingya issue.

The US minister is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the visit. The meeting will be held by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Same with Abdul Momen. Besides, Julieta will meet with the Minister and top officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Disaster Management and Relief during the visit.

It is said that he will also interact with regional representatives of NGOs working with refugees and the media.
