Hathazari Correspondent: A century-old ancient pond is being filled in Hathazari in public, ignoring the environmental laws. Locals are expressing fears that the filling of the ancient pond in public, without paying attention to the environmental laws, will not only cause environmental damage but also hinder the firefighting system due to water shortage.
On Tuesday afternoon, when we went to the Namarbazar area of Ward No. 9 of Mekhal Union of the upazila, we saw that someone had filled a large part of the western side of the huge ancient pond on the eastern side adjacent to Namar Bazar on Mekhal Ramesh Mahajan Road.
In addition, large trees around the pond have also been cut down. When asked who is filling the pond, no one present could provide that information. However, some locals, on condition of anonymity, said that some influential people in the area are taking advantage of this time of change of government to fill the pond under the umbrella of influential leaders of the Awami League.
This ancient pond near Mekhal Union Parishad has been filled up day and night for the past 15-20 days, but they have not taken any action so far.
Another source said that those who bought the pond will fill it up and sell it as a plot. For this, they have done what they have to manage. That is why everyone is silent.
