The Crime Desk: The Election Commission (EC) will publish the draft voter list today. After publishing this list, the final voter list will be prepared on March 2 after resolving the claims and objections. EC Public Relations Director Md. Shariful Islam gave this information on Wednesday (January 1).
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah will brief the Election Commission on this at 10:30 am on Thursday (January 2). EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed and NID Director General ASM Humayun Kabir will be present at the time.
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah said that the voter list is updated every year on January 2. So far, the EC has information on 1.7 million voters, which will be inserted today. Through this, they will be added to the list as new voters.
According to the Voter List Act, citizens of Bangladesh can become voters only after completing the age of 18. Therefore, one can become a voter at any time of the year. However, the Election Commission updates the voter list on March 2 of every year. Before that, it publishes the draft list on January 2 and takes claims and objections. The final list is published only after they are settled. And national and local government elections are held on the basis of this list.
EC sources said that finally, approximately 27 to 28 lakh (maybe more or less) new voters may be eligible to become voters. Of the 17 lakh information that the EC has, 13 lakh was collected in 2022. And the remaining four lakh have registered at various offices.
Those who were excluded can also be added to the voter list, so the EC will go door to door to collect information. In addition to these excluded voters, the information of those who will become voters in 2025, that is, those who will be eligible to become voters on January 1, 2026, will also be collected door to door. This process will be undertaken from next March.
EC officials said that the door-to-door update process may start from January 20. According to the latest update, there are 121,850,160 voters in the country.
