The Crime Desk: With respect and love, his long-time colleagues, relatives, and well-wishers bid farewell to the advisor to the interim government and former attorney general, eminent lawyer AF Hasan Arif, from the Supreme Court premises.
The second funeral of AF Hasan Arif, advisor to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism and Land, was held at the Supreme Court premises. The funeral was held at around 11 am on Saturday (December 21).
The funeral was attended by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Towhid Hossain, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, senior lawyers Barrister M Amir-ul Islam and Dr. Kamal Hossain, Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Senior Advocate Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md. Tajul Islam, Supreme Court judges, lawyers, and numerous people.
In addition, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change and Water Resources, was present there and expressed her condolences to the bereaved family members of advisor Hasan Arif.
After the funeral, the Chief Justice paid floral tributes to him for the last time. A wreath was also placed on behalf of the Supreme Court lawyers.
According to family sources, his only daughter will come to Bangladesh from France tomorrow to pay her last respects, and then he will be laid to rest at the Mirpur Intellectual Graveyard.
Earlier, on Friday, after Isha, the advisor’s first namaz-e-janaza was held at Baitul Aman Mosque No. 7, Dhanmondi. The third namaz-e-janaza of the deceased was held at 12 noon in the Secretariat premises.
In the interim government formed on August 8, Hasan Arif was initially given the responsibility of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Land. Later, he was given the responsibility of the Ministry of Land and Civil Aviation and Tourism.
He served as attorney general from October 2001 to April 2005. From 2008 to January 2009, he was the legal advisor to the caretaker government. AF Hasan Arif started his career in 1967 from the Calcutta High Court in West Bengal, India. Then in 1970, he moved to Dhaka and started working as a lawyer in the High Court.
Earlier, AF Hasan Arif served as a legal advisor in various institutions. These include the Roads and Highways Department, Chittagong Port Authority, Mongla Port Authority, Security and Exchange Commission, Bangladesh Bank, Chittagong Development Authority, Chittagong Stock Exchange, University Grants Commission, and Grameenphone Bangladesh.
He works in the areas of foreign investor advisory, construction arbitration, commercial arbitration, finance, banking and securities matters, corporate, commercial, and taxation matters, constitutional law matters, arbitration, and other methods of alternative dispute resolution. He was currently the advisor to the Dhakeshwari National Temple Complex.
A. F. Hasan Arif was born in Kolkata in 1941. He completed his secondary and higher secondary education at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. He then completed his graduation and LLB degrees from the University of Calcutta.
