The Crime Desk: The direct road communication between the headquarters of Bandarban in the Hill District and Ruma Upazila has been disrupted after the collapse of the Bailey Bridge in Ruma Upazila.
A Bailey bridge collapsed in the Kukshangjhiri area of the Bandarban-Wa Junction-Ruma road around 8 am on Sunday (December 8). After that, the direct road communication between the district headquarters and Ruma Upazila was disrupted.
Vehicles are plying on both sides of the bridge on that road. Transport workers said that passenger buses are also plying on both sides of the collapsed bridge. Ruma Upazila Transport Workers’ Committee Lineman Abu Bakkar said that a Bailey bridge in the Kukshangjhiri Bazar area collapsed around 8 am while a heavy vehicle was crossing.
However, the vehicle was not damaged in the accident. The bridge deck opened. After that, no vehicles can ply on that bridge. However, passengers are crossing the collapsed bridge on foot and using vehicles from both directions.
Passenger buses are plying on both sides of the Bailey Bridge. The bridge that collapsed in the Kukshangjhiri Bazar area is located on the Bandarban-Wa Junction-Ruma road. It is 40 kilometers from the district town and 8 kilometers from Ruma Upazila headquarters.
Drivers at the Ruma bus station in the district town said that vehicles were plying on the bridge last Saturday night as well. Vehicles that left for Ruma in the morning could not reach Ruma Upazila headquarters after 8 am.
Executive Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department Md. Nazrul Islam said that the people in charge of the road in that area have been informed about the collapsed Bailey Bridge. They will take immediate measures to repair it.
