Rangunia Correspondent: The supporting wall and CC block at the base of the bridge built a year ago on the Ghagra Canal in Rangunia have collapsed. This has made the bridge risky. However, arrangements have been made for urgent repairs, said the concerned.
According to the concerned sources, the Ghagra Bridge was constructed by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in the Deba area of Halimpur Baishya, on the border of South Rajanagar and Rajanagar Unions of the upazila, around 2023. The 32-meter-long PC girder bridge was built at a cost of 17,32,802 taka with funding from the World Bank and the Bangladesh government.
Locals said that the supporting wall and CC block at the base of the bridge collapsed within a year of construction. This has made the bridge risky. They also said that there is a fear of an accident. The locals demanded that the bridge be repaired quickly before major erosion and damage occur.
A local man named Rahim Uddin said hundreds of vehicles from five unions use this bridge every day. Local farmers and school and college students travel on this bridge. There is panic among everyone as the bridge has collapsed from below.
In this regard, Upazila Engineer Md. Didarul Alam said this situation has arisen after a tree fell at the base of the bridge. Steps have been taken to repair it quickly.
