Sherpur Correspondent: Flash floods have occurred in several parts of Sherpur and Mymensingh due to landslides and heavy rains. At least 113 villages in Nalitabari, Srivardi, and Jhenaigati upazilas of Sherpur and 50 villages in Dhobaura of Mymensingh have been inundated.
Crop lands in these areas have been submerged in floods, and fish in ponds have been washed away. Hundreds of thousands of families have been trapped in water.
The water in the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers started rising last Thursday evening. Heavy rains and hill slopes have broken the dams of the two rivers, and the water is overflowing. Gagkanda and Nichpara areas of the municipality along with Poragaon, Nayabil, Ramchandrakura, and Baghber Union were inundated. Nanni-Ambagan road, Nanni-Madhutila Ecopark road, and Ambagan-Batkuchi road have been submerged in Chellakhali river water.
Upazila Parishad Square, Sadar Bazar, and lower areas of 40 villages have been flooded in Jhenaigati. On Friday, around 5,000 people became waterlogged as the water in the Maharshi and Someswari rivers rose abnormally.
Around 2000 people from 13 villages in Ranishimul and Singabaruna Union bordering Srivardi Upazila of Sherpur have become waterlogged. Many roads were submerged in torrential water, and traffic was stopped. Aman’s fields are submerged.
At least 50 villages of the upazila have been flooded due to continuous rains and landslides in the Netayi river of Dhobaura in Mymensingh. There is no mobile phone network as the areas have been cut off.
Humayun Kabir, chairman of Dakshin Maijpara Union Parishad of Dhobaura upazila, told the media that it has been raining continuously throughout the day. The dam broke in several places, including Kalikabari, Panchanandpur, Sehagipara, and Mandirghona.
