In the Chittagong flood, the loss in the fisheries sector is Tk 290 crore

The Crime Desk: In Chittagong, numerous fish farming ponds have been washed away due to floods caused by continuous rains and water coming down from India. In this, the amount of loss in the fisheries sector is about 290 crore rupees. However, the amount of damage will increase further, said District Fisheries Officer Srivas Chandra Chand.

He said that last year (2023), heavy rains in August and floods caused heavy losses in the fisheries sector across Chittagong district. Due to the heavy rains and hilly floods of the last few days, 16 thousand 864 ponds and fish food and 12 hectares of fish enclosures in Banshkhali have been damaged in 162 municipalities and union level in 15 upazilas of the district.

16 thousand 595 tens of 8 metric tons of fish and 14 metric tons of fish fry were damaged in these affected farms. In terms of money, the loss of fish is 289 crore, 67 lakh, 92 thousand taka, and the loss of love is 50 lakh, 80 thousand taka. Fish and infrastructure have been damaged to the tune of 290 crore, 47 lakh, 42 thousand rupees.

He further said, ‘Here we farmers have listed a loss. Out of this, about 600 crores worth of damage has been revealed. I have been involved in fish farming for 8 years. I have never faced such a big loss.

Sources from the District Fisheries Officer’s office said that the fish in Mirsarai, Fatikchari, Hathazari, Raujan, Sitakunda, and other upazilas of Chittagong have been washed away. In Mirsarai upazila alone, the loss in fisheries is around 142 crore taka. Fatikchari Upazila suffered more damage after Mirsarai. Most of the union ponds and fisheries projects of this upazila have been washed away. The loss is about 30 crore 10 lakh taka.

The same situation happened in Hathazari upazila. In this upazila, fish worth 12 million taka have been washed away in the river. In other upazilas also, the flood has caused a lot of damage to the fisheries sector.
