Chakaria Correspondent: Continuous heavy rains have caused severe landslides in Harbang in Chakaria. At least 20 houses have been destroyed. Currently, the members of these families are living an inhumane life under the open sky. This landslide happened in the hill town of Gaina Kata village in Harbang Union of the upazila for the last two days.
Chairman of Harbang Union Parishad. Mehraj Uddin Miraj said that the heavy rains of the last few days and the torrential downpours have destroyed the rural infrastructure. Horrible landslides have occurred in Gainakata village in the hilly area of the union. Meanwhile, at least 20 houses have been completely buried under the ground. Huge mountains have also collapsed at various places during the heavy rains. At present, the affected families are living under the open sky. These matters have been informed to the Upazila administration in writing.
Ziabul Karim, a resident of Gainakata village, said that it has been raining continuously for the past four days. After two days of rain, the sudden landslide started. At least 20 homesteads were destroyed in the terrible landslides. Also, some big hills of Gainakata village also merged with the ground in a moment. Panic spread throughout the neighborhood.
The members of the affected families said that the families who are victims of this terrible disaster are currently living inhuman life under the open sky. They cannot be resettled unless they are given financial assistance by the government. So they requested the upazila administration’s intervention in this matter.

Abu Hasnat Sarkar said that dry food and blankets were distributed among the members of the families affected by the landslide in Gainakata village of Harbang during the heavy rains. A list of the victims has been received in writing from the Chairman of the Union Parishad. Next steps will be taken to rehabilitate them.
Chakaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Fakhrul Islam said that the list of families affected by the landslide has been taken. The Upazila administration will provide construction materials and incidental expenses so that these families can resettle.
