A government bulletin on August 16 said that the government can remove mayors and councilors of any city corporation and municipality in the public interest if it is deemed necessary in special circumstances. Similarly, the chairman and members of the zilla parishad and the chairman, vice chairman, and female vice chairmen of the upazila parishad can be removed. At the same time, the government can appoint administrators in these.
By making such provisions as ‘Local Government (City Corporations) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘Local Government (Municipalities) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘District Councils (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ and ‘Upazilla Parishad (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ has been approved by the Advisory Council of the Interim Government.
The next day, on August 17, the President issued an ordinance in this regard.
