The Crime Desk: Chairman of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ben Cardin, called on Bangladesh to form a responsible caretaker government to organize participatory democratic elections immediately.
US Senator Ben Cardin released a statement on Tuesday (Aug. 6) after Bangladesh’s president dissolved parliament, paving the way for fresh elections after the prime minister resigned and fled the country amid weeks of growing protests against his leadership.
In the statement, Ben Cardin said, ‘Where democracy and political expression are increasingly threatened in the world, the people of Bangladesh have courageously demonstrated to the global community the transformation of power in a collective effort. When citizens unite, their voices can force even the most staunch and autocratic leaders to abdicate.’
But so much violence and bloodshed is unacceptable, Ben Cardin added. We mourn those who lost their lives. A government that has periodically strangled the opposition for at least a decade, manipulated the courts, and tooled the security services against its own citizens. We celebrate the new opportunity that has been created in Bangladesh to establish democracy based on constitutional principles.
He further said, I strongly urge the Bangladesh authorities to form a responsible caretaker government, which will hold early participatory democratic elections. The people of Bangladesh deserve a government that will respect their voice, respect their will, and uphold the dignity of the nation.
