City Reporter: Police clashed with students agitating for quota reform in the third Shah Amanat Setu (Natun Bridge) area of Chittagong. A college student was arrested by the police.
According to the police, he was arrested on suspicion of student gangs. The arrested student’s name is Nazmul Hasan (25). He is said to be an honors fourth-year student at Government City College.
Besides, at least 10 people were reported injured in the clash. Many of them have been taken to a private hospital in the city.
The clash started around 11:30 on Thursday (July 18). The police dispersed the protesters by firing tear gas. It is known that the agitators took position in the new bridge area at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, they tried to block the road with different slogans. This started the conflict with the police.
Meanwhile, in the ‘Complete Shutdown’ program announced by the quota activists, traffic in Chittagong City is normal. However, no long-distance vehicles are running.
ADC Ashraful Karim, who was on the spot in the new bridge area, said, “We got information about the gathering of the boys of the student camp here (the new bridge). We have entered the field to resist them. One person has been detained. A large number of BGB and policemen are on the ground. Three riot cars from BGB and two platoons from BGB have entered the field.
