Own Correspondent: An accused has died abnormally in the custody of the Chandgaon police station of the city. His name is Md. Jewell (22). On Wednesday morning, the police found his body hanging from the ventilator of the police station. Although his house is in the Khejurtala area of the Chandgaon police station, Jewel lived with his family members in the Patharghata area of the Kotwali police station in the city. According to the police, he committed suicide by taking off his shirt and putting a noose around his neck.
Chandgaon Thana Police arrested Jewel from his home last Tuesday (July 2) night on the basis of a court warrant in an arms case filed at Kotwali Police Station. As per rules, he was kept in police custody at night. He was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday afternoon. In the CCTV footage of Chandgaon police station, it was seen that after taking off his shirt, Hajat stood on the half wall of the toilet and first tied one hand of Jewel’s shirt to the ventilator. He hanged himself by twisting his hanging hand around his neck. He became dull within a minute.
Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidul Kabir told the media that Jewel was alone in the jail throughout the night. The duty officer went and spoke to him around 2:30 a.m. From 5:25 to 6:00 in the morning, the duty officer and the jail guard talked to Jewel in front of the jail.
When the duty officer and the sentry approached Jewel in the morning, she said that she had taken a medicine after breakfast but did not know the name of the medicine. For this, he was asked to speak to his sister-in-law, Sagar, on the phone. The duty officer allowed him to talk on the mobile. After six o’clock, the duty officer and the sentry left from the front of the toilet. Five minutes after the new sentry took charge at seven in the morning, he found Jewel hanging. Between 6:24 and 6:27 in the morning, he was seen hanging with his shirt tied to the ventilator on the CCTV camera.
Meanwhile, Jewel’s mother, wife, and some other relatives went in front of the police station at around 12 o’clock. They were shouting in front of the police station. Addressing the police, his mother, Minara Begum, said, “You have brought my son back to health.” He came with you, smiling. Why will he die? returned him to me. I want my son back alive. In front of them, the body was taken to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue in an ambulance. During the ambulance ride, the screaming relatives lay in front and held it back for a while. Later, the police removed them and took the body to the morgue.
Chandgaon Police Station, OC Zahidul Kabir said that a case of wrongful death has been filed in this incident. At around 11:30 am, the District Administration Magistrate went to the police station and completed the postmortem of the body. The police also made separate arrangements.
