DHAKA BUREAU: Two more ready-made garment companies have received eco-friendly green factory certificates. With the newly added companies, the number of green prisons in the country has increased to 220. On Wednesday (June 12), the association of garment industry owners, BGMEA, reported this information.

It is reported that one of the two companies that got the new eco-friendly certificate is Graphics Textiles Limited, located in Gazipur, Kashipur, Srirampur. The company received the Lead Gold certificate by achieving 78 points. The other is Cotton Club & Cotton Clout, located in Kashipur Jarun (South). The company received the Lead Gold certificate by achieving 71 points.

According to BGMEA data, 56 of the world’s 100 environmentally friendly green factories, i.e., more than half of the factories, are in Bangladesh. Two more companies have recently been added to this list. Out of the total 220 lead-certified factories with newly added green factories, 84 are platinum-rated, 122 are gold-rated, 10 are silver-rated, and 4 are certified. Now, 56 of the top 100 highest-quality lead-eco-friendly factories worldwide are in Bangladesh.

The US Green Building Council (USGBC) certifies environmentally friendly buildings as ‘LEED’. Full version of Lead Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. To obtain this certificate, a project must maintain the highest standards from construction to production under the supervision of the USGBC.

There are a total of 110 points for fulfilling the nine conditions for the LEAD certificate. If above 80 points, ‘Lead Platinum’, ‘Lead Gold’ if 60–79, ‘Lead Silver’ if 50–59, and ‘Lead Certified’ if 40–49 points.

Qualifying for LEAD certification is not an easy task, requiring significant investment. Another 500 factories in Bangladesh are in the process of being lead-certified.
