Dhaka Bureau: Inspector General (IGP) of the force Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun said that the police knew that Constable Kawshar Ali, accused in the murder of Constable Monirul Haque in Baridhara of the capital, was mentally ill.

He said that he was put in charge because of the certificate issued by Kawcha’s health physician.

The IGP said these things at a function for the foundation anniversary of the Highway Police at Rajarbagh Police Auditorium on Tuesday (June 11). Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was present as the chief guest on the occasion. He also spoke about the mental health of the police at the event.

The IGP said that though the department was aware of Constable Kauchar’s mental illness, he was kept on duty after the doctors gave him a certificate of sanity.

However, DMP Additional Commissioner Khandkar Mahid Uddin told reporters yesterday, “DMP did not know about Kawchar’s mental illness.” He said on remand that Kawchar was upset about some personal matters. But the investigation will reveal the root cause of this incident.’

Ever since the incident, Kawchar’s family members have been claiming that he was mentally ill. His mother, Mabia Khatun, claims, “Kawcha is a good boy.” He has a problem with his head. After joining the service, he became addicted to drugs and fell ill as a result. Every time Kauchar was taken to a mental hospital, the police were informed, or he was treated under police supervision. His higher authorities know that he is a mental patient.

Meanwhile, a 3-member committee headed by the DC of Gulshan has been formed to investigate the shooting of Constable Monirul Haque. The committee has to report within the next 7 days. Policeman Kawshar Ali was remanded for 7 days when he appeared in court last Sunday.

Accused Kawshar Ali shot and killed his colleague in the Baridhara diplomatic zone of the capital last Saturday night.

It is known that Kaushar joined the Bangladesh Police on December 15, 2005. Later, he got married in 2006. There are two sons in the family. He became addicted to drugs around 2010 while working. Since then, he has been suffering from mental illness.
