Own Correspondent: The first tube of Bangabandhu Tunnel under construction under Karnaphuli in Chittagong will be inaugurated on Saturday (November 26). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will join and inaugurate it virtually. The concerned have already completed all the preparations.
Manjur Hossain, secretary of the bridge department of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, gave this information in a letter.
He said that the construction of the south tube of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tunnel has been completed. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate it by participating virtually as the chief guest.
Harunur Rashid, the director of the Karnaphuli tunnel construction project, said that the government is building a tunnel under the Karnaphuli river to make Chittagong a ‘one city to town’ model like Shanghai in China. The prime minister will inaugurate a tube of the much-awaited tunnel.
The opening ceremony will be held at the Patenga end of the tunnel. The entire tunnel will be inaugurated next January. Ministers, members of parliament, political figures and many others will be involved in it.
Earlier, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader also announced the inauguration of Bangabandhu Tunnel in two parts at the Secretariat on September 7.
Incidentally, the country’s first tunnel is being built in Karnaphuli with the cooperation of China. The mega project is under construction at a cost of Tk 10 thousand 374 crore. Now the work of fire fighting, lighting and control management is going on inside the tunnel.
The project vehicle is being tested there. Being under the river, 52 irrigation pumps are being installed due to the fear that water may accumulate for safety. Work is also underway to provide an alternate route in case of an accident in one of the two tubes laid under the river.
