Six districts are at risk of flooding

The Crime Desk: Cyclone Remal’s effects have largely subsided. The cyclone weakened to low pressure on Tuesday evening. However, in the midst of this, the Water Development Board (PUBO) has given a glimpse of flooding. The Bangladesh Water Development Board (PUBO) said that the water level of the main rivers in the north-eastern and south-eastern regions of the country is increasing.

Paubo’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said on Wednesday (May 29), Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Moulvibazar in the northeastern part of the country and some low-lying areas of Feni, Bandarban, and Chittagong districts in the southeastern hilly region may be at risk of short-term flash floods.

According to Paubo, water levels in four rivers were above the danger mark at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Pasur River water level at Mongla point in Bagerhat is 55 cm; Sarigoin River water level at Sarighat Point in Sylhet is 26 cm; the water level of the Dhalai river was 21 cm at Kamalganj point of Moulvibazar; and the water level of the Khoai river was 75 cm above the flood limit at Balla point of Habiganj.

According to Paubo, the water level of the Brahmaputra-Yamuna and Ganga rivers is increasing. On the other hand, the water level of the Padma River is decreasing. In the next 48 hours, the water level of the Brahmaputra and Yamuna rivers may continue to rise, while the water level of the Ganga and Padma rivers may decrease. Besides, the water levels of major rivers in the north-eastern and south-eastern regions of the country are increasing. In the next 48 hours, the water levels of major rivers in the region may increase.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, moderate-to-heavy rainfall is expected in the next 24 to 48 hours in the interior and upstream parts of the country. The water levels of the main rivers in the northern, northeastern, and southeastern regions of the country may increase, and short-term flooding may occur in some parts of the northeastern region by crossing the danger line.
