The Crime Desk: The United States is not withdrawing the ban on the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Assistant Press Secretary Vedanta Patel gave this information at the regular briefing of the US State Department on Thursday, May 16.
During the briefing, a journalist asked, and an adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told reporters after Assistant Foreign Minister Donald Lu’s visit to Dhaka that the White House and the US State Department are interested in lifting the sanctions imposed on RAB for human rights violations and extrajudicial killings. The White House and the State Department are working on it, he said.
At that time, Patel said these claims were untrue. The US is not lifting sanctions on RAB. These claims are false. Sanctions are intended to change behavior and promote accountability.
