Bandarban Correspondent: The District and Sessions Judge Court sentenced a man named Ali Ahmed (54) to life imprisonment for killing his stepmother in Bandarban. In addition, he was fined ten thousand taka. Today, Monday (November 21) at noon, District and Sessions Judge Md. Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan gave this verdict. This judgment was given 24 years after the incident.
Convicted Ali Ahmed (54) is the son of Roshan Ali of Merakhola Begunjhiri area of Lama Upazila of the district.
Confirming the truth of the verdict, the government counsel for the state (Public Prosecutor – PP) Md. Iqbal Karim.
He said that as the offense under section 302 was proved against the accused, the learned court convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment and fine.
According to the information disclosed in the court, Roshan Ali had two marriages. Later, there was a dispute between the two families for a long time regarding the division of property in both the families. Fatema Begum (40) went to the local Matamuhuri river to fetch water on Tuesday morning, June 30, 1998. On the way back with water, Ali Mohammad hit his stepmother Fatema Begum on the neck with a sharp knife. Fatem Begum fell to the ground when her head was split in two. Accused Ali fled from the spot. Later, he was arrested from Merakhola school after being chased.
According to sources, the deceased woman’s children are small and the husband is old and deaf, so the relatives of the deceased said. When Siraj filed a statement in Lama police station as a plaintiff, GR case no-22/1998 (Lama police station case no- 03, dated 30/06/1998) was initiated. After the case, the Investigating Officer sent the accused to the Magistrate to plead guilty, after the accused Ali Ahmed confessed to the Magistrate, after the Investigating Officer of the case filed a charge sheet, the case was transferred to the learned Sessions Judge’s Court for trial, Sessions Case No-23/ 1999 began.
PP Advocate Iqbal Karim said, after taking the testimony of six witnesses in the case, after hearing the arguments of both sides, the bail of the accused was canceled and he was sent to jail and on Monday (November 21), the learned Sessions Judge Md. Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan sentenced Ali Ahmed to life imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 rupees. Accused Ali Ahmed was present in the court. Later the accused was sent to jail.
PP Iqbal Karim was for the government in the case. Advocate Zainal Abdin Bhuiyan appeared for the accused.
