Dhaka Bureau: 407 people were killed and 1,398 injured in road accidents in the country on the 15th day of Eid Yatra. These casualties occurred in 399 accidents. As always, motorcycles are at the top of the list of accidents.

This information was given in the report of the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association in a press conference organized at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Saturday, April 20.

In the press conference, the secretary general of the association, Md. Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, said that observation showed that 20 percent more people traveled this time due to the long Eid holiday. 399 road accidents have been organized in the country in the last 15 days, from April 4 to April 18.

407 people were killed in it. During this time, 1,398 people were injured. Motorcycles are at the top of accidents. 165 people were killed and 240 injured in 198 motorcycle accidents, which accounted for 49.62 percent of total road accidents, 40.54 percent of fatalities, and 30.37 percent of injuries.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said that the current road transport minister could not develop the transport sector even after being in charge for the last 20 years. We call upon the minister to establish good road governance. Despite the infrastructural development of the country’s highways, the legal issues still remain shaky.

In their recommendation, Jatri Kalyan Samiti says that to protest against road accidents, the import and registration of motorcycle easy bikes should be stopped on an urgent basis. Separate lanes should be provided for slow lane and fast lane.

Expired public transport and long-standing fitness hill vehicles should be scrubbed. Initiatives should be taken to implement the Road Transport Act in a digital manner. The capacity of BRTA should be increased by building a modern, high-quality pass network.

Among others present at the press conference were former member of parliament Lutfunnesa Khan, public transport expert Abdul Haque, organization vice president Tawhidul Haque Liton, joint secretary general Monirul Haque, publicity secretary Mahmudul Hasan Russell, and others.
