Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: Police have arrested Bappi (23), the main accused dumper driver in the murder of Sajjaduzzaman, Beat Officer of Ukhia Range, Cox’s Bazar. He was arrested at Chittagong’s Bandar police station on Monday, April 8.
According to the police sources, during the initial interrogation, Bappi said that the driver was sitting next to her at the time of the incident. Accused number 10 in the case is Kamal Uddin, driver, son of Shah Alam of Harinmara area of Rajapalang, and two days before the incident, the deceased forest officer seized several other dumpers from Harinmara along with Kamal Uddin driver. That is why the defendants in this case, along with Kamal Uddin, the driverstarted planning in advance to kill forest officer Sajjad while on duty. Last but not least, on March 31, around 3 a.m. in the Harinmara area, Sajjad went on a raid. Seeing the dumper coming out of the forest with hill soil, the driver, Bappi, did not stop the vehicle and ran over Sajjad, killing him and running away with the dumper.
Accused Bappi left the dumper in the hilly area of neighboring Naikshyongchari upazila and fled. Later, the Ukhia police station seized the dumper truck used in the murder from Naikshyongchari and brought it to the police station at noon on the day of the incident.
The police also said that the driver, Bappi, destroyed his mobile phone and SIM after the incident and went into hiding in Chittagong. The police arrested him from there.
On Tuesday (April 9) in the morning of Harinmara of Ukhia, the main accused in the murder case of Sajjaduzzman Sajal, a forest officer, was Md. Additional Superintendent of Police (Ukhia Circle) said after Bappi’s arrest. Russell gave this information at the press conference.
In the early morning of March 31, Sajjad, the deceased forest officer, got the news of cutting and dumping soil in the Harinmara area of Rajapalong, Ukhia. Along with Ali, they went on a motorcycle expedition to Harinmara. There, Sajjad was crushed to death by the wheel of a dumper.
In this incident, on April 1, the Ukhia range officer filed a case with the Ukhia police station, mentioning the names of 10 people. Also, 5–6 more people are given unknowns. Two accused have been arrested in this case so far. Accused No. 5 in the case is Syed Karim (35) and main accused dumper driver Bappi (23). Syed Karim was arrested earlier, and he is now in jail.
The deceased forest officer, Sajjaduzzaman Sajal, was working as a beat officer in the Dauchhari range of the Ukhia range. His house is in Vitikandi, in the Ghazaria upazila of Munshiganj district. He joined the forest department in 2020.
