Dhaka Bureau: Voting has begun for the two-day election for the 2024–2025 executive committee of the Dhaka Lawyers’ Association.
Voting begins at 9 a.m. on Wednesday (February 28). It will continue until 5 p.m. with a break of one hour. Voting will continue on Thursday as well.
There are 30 thousand 121 lawyer members. Out of which 21 thousand 137 lawyers will exercise voting rights in this election, Senior lawyer Mokhleshur Rahman Badal is serving as Chief Election Commissioner. Under which 10 commissioners and 100 members are working to conduct fair elections.
In this election, the white panel, supported by Awami League Bangabandhu Awami Lawyer Parishad, and the blue panel, supported by BNP-Jamaat Nationalist Lawyers Oikya, are participating in the election.
Those concerned say that this year’s election will be a bitter fight between the candidates of the white and blue parties. There is no opportunity to advance any candidate.
In the election, Abdur Rahman Hawladar is the president of the white panel supported by the Awami League, and Md. is the general secretary. Anwar Shahadat Shaon.
The candidates for the other posts on the white panel are: Abul Kalam Mohammad Akhtar Hossain for the post of senior vice president, and Md. for the post of vice president. Abu Taiyab, treasurer; Omar Farooq, senior deputy general secretary. Masrat Ali Tuhin, Asaduzzaman Babu as co-general secretary, Humayun Kabir Sabuj as library editor, Monira Begum Moni as cultural editor, Sarwar Jahan as office editor, sports editor Md. Wakilur Rahman, Pradeep Chandra Sarkar as social welfare secretary, and Syeda Farida Yachmin JC as information and communication secretary.
Emdadul Haque Emdan, Hafiz Al Mamun, Kazi Humayun Kabir, Mahmudul Hasan, Abdur Rahman Mia, Md. Imran Hasan, Md. Mohsin Uddin, Mohammad Moin Uddin Biplab, Shaheen Ahmed Rupam, and Suman Ahmed.
The president of the blue panel, the former general secretary of the candidate association, the defeated candidate for the last two times, Advocate Md. Khorshed Mia Alam, and general secretary candidate Advocate Syed Nazrul Islam, who has been defeated for the last two times,.
The candidates for the other positions on the blue panel are: senior vice president; the last two defeated candidates are Md. Abdur Razzak (Jamaat); and vice president. Sahiduzzaman, treasurer; Abdur Rashid Molla, senior general secretary. Zahirul Hasan Mukul, Syed Mohammad Nazrul Hossain (APU) as co-general secretary, and Mosa as library editor. Nargis Parveen Mukti, the last two defeated candidates for the post of cultural editor, and Nurjahan Begum Beauty, office editor. Anwarul Islam, Mohammad Mubarak Hossain as sports editor, Mahbub Hasan Rana as social welfare editor, and information and communication editor. Mazharul Islam Maruf.

It is to be noted that the white panel of the Combined Lawyers Coordination Parishad, supported by the Awami League, won 23 positions out of 23 in the 2023–2024 Executive Committee of the Dhaka Lawyers Association. In that election, BNP-Jamaat-backed nationalist lawyer Oikya’s blue panel rejected the results and alleged rigging.
Earlier, in the 2022–2023 executive committee election, the white panel of the Combined Lawyers Coordination Council, supported by the Awami League, won 17 out of 23 posts, including president and general secretary. On the other hand, BNP-Jamaat-backed nationalist lawyer Oikya’s blue panel won six posts, including two editorial posts.
